Samuel Chapter 5 שְׁמוּאֵל א


א וּפְלִשְׁתִּים, לָקְחוּ, אֵת, אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים; וַיְבִאֻהוּ מֵאֶבֶן הָעֵזֶר, אַשְׁדּוֹדָה. 1 Now the Philistines had taken the ark of Eloheem, and they brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod.
ב וַיִּקְחוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אֶת-אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים, וַיָּבִאוּ אֹתוֹ בֵּית דָּגוֹן; וַיַּצִּיגוּ אֹתוֹ, אֵצֶל דָּגוֹן. 2 And the Philistines took the ark of Eloheem, and brought it into the house of a falsegod, and set it by a falsegod.
ג וַיַּשְׁכִּמוּ אַשְׁדּוֹדִים, מִמָּחֳרָת, וְהִנֵּה דָגוֹן נֹפֵל לְפָנָיו אַרְצָה, לִפְנֵי אֲרוֹן יְהוָה; וַיִּקְחוּ, אֶת-דָּגוֹן, וַיָּשִׁבוּ אֹתוֹ, לִמְקוֹמוֹ. 3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, a falsegod was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of YAHOWAH. And they took a falsegod, and set him in his place again.
ד וַיַּשְׁכִּמוּ בַבֹּקֶר, מִמָּחֳרָת, וְהִנֵּה דָגוֹן נֹפֵל לְפָנָיו אַרְצָה, לִפְנֵי אֲרוֹן יְהוָה; וְרֹאשׁ דָּגוֹן וּשְׁתֵּי כַּפּוֹת יָדָיו, כְּרֻתוֹת אֶל-הַמִּפְתָּן--רַק דָּגוֹן, נִשְׁאַר עָלָיו. 4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, a falsegod was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of YAHOWAH; and the head of a falsegod and both the palms of his hands lay cut off upon the threshold; only the trunk of a falsegod was left to him.
ה עַל-כֵּן לֹא-יִדְרְכוּ כֹהֲנֵי דָגוֹן וְכָל-הַבָּאִים בֵּית-דָּגוֹן, עַל-מִפְתַּן דָּגוֹן--בְּאַשְׁדּוֹד:  עַד, הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.  {פ} 5 Therefore neither the priests of a falsegod, nor any that come into a falsegod's house, tread on the threshold of a falsegod in Ashdod unto this day. {P}
ו וַתִּכְבַּד יַד-יְהוָה אֶל-הָאַשְׁדּוֹדִים, וַיְשִׁמֵּם; וַיַּךְ אֹתָם בעפלים (בַּטְּחֹרִים), אֶת-אַשְׁדּוֹד וְאֶת-גְּבוּלֶיהָ. 6 But the hand of YAHOWAH was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and He destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the borders thereof.
ז וַיִּרְאוּ אַנְשֵׁי-אַשְׁדּוֹד, כִּי-כֵן; וְאָמְרוּ, לֹא-יֵשֵׁב אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עִמָּנוּ--כִּי-קָשְׁתָה יָדוֹ עָלֵינוּ, וְעַל דָּגוֹן אֱלֹהֵינוּ. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said: 'The ark of the Eloheem of Yisrael shall not abide with us; for His hand is sore upon us, and upon a falsegod our god.'
ח וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ וַיַּאַסְפוּ אֶת-כָּל-סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים אֲלֵיהֶם, וַיֹּאמְרוּ מַה-נַּעֲשֶׂה לַאֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיֹּאמְרוּ, גַּת יִסֹּב אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיַּסֵּבּוּ, אֶת-אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.  {ס} 8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said: 'What shall we do with the ark of the Eloheem of Yisrael?' And they answered: 'Let the ark of the Eloheem of Yisrael be carried about unto Gath.' And they carried the ark of the Eloheem of Yisrael about thither. {S}
ט וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי הֵסַבּוּ אֹתוֹ, וַתְּהִי יַד-יְהוָה בָּעִיר מְהוּמָה גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד, וַיַּךְ אֶת-אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר, מִקָּטֹן וְעַד-גָּדוֹל; וַיִּשָּׂתְרוּ לָהֶם, עפלים (טְחֹרִים). 9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of YAHOWAH was against the city with a very great discomfiture; and He smote the men of the city, both small and great, and emerods broke out upon them.
י וַיְשַׁלְּחוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים, עֶקְרוֹן; וַיְהִי, כְּבוֹא אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים עֶקְרוֹן, וַיִּזְעֲקוּ הָעֶקְרֹנִים לֵאמֹר הֵסַבּוּ אֵלַי אֶת-אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לַהֲמִיתֵנִי וְאֶת-עַמִּי. 10 So they sent the ark of Eloheem to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of Eloheem came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying: 'They have brought about the ark of the Eloheem of Yisrael to us, to slay us and our people.'
יא וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ וַיַּאַסְפוּ אֶת-כָּל-סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים, וַיֹּאמְרוּ שַׁלְּחוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיָשֹׁב לִמְקוֹמוֹ, וְלֹא-יָמִית אֹתִי, וְאֶת-עַמִּי:  כִּי-הָיְתָה מְהוּמַת-מָוֶת בְּכָל-הָעִיר, כָּבְדָה מְאֹד יַד הָאֱלֹהִים שָׁם. 11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said: 'Send away the ark of the Eloheem of Yisrael, and let it go back to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people'; for there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city; the hand of Eloheem was very heavy there.
יב וְהָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לֹא-מֵתוּ, הֻכּוּ בעפלים (בַּטְּחֹרִים); וַתַּעַל שַׁוְעַת הָעִיר, הַשָּׁמָיִם.  {ס} 12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods; and the cry of the city went up to heaven. {S}
