וַיָּבֹאוּ אַנְשֵׁי קִרְיַת יְעָרִים, וַיַּעֲלוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָה, וַיָּבִאוּ אֹתוֹ, אֶל-בֵּית אֲבִינָדָב בַּגִּבְעָה; וְאֶת-אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ קִדְּשׁוּ, לִשְׁמֹר אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָה. {פ}

And the men of Kiriath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of YAHOWAH, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of YAHOWAH.

וַיְהִי, מִיּוֹם שֶׁבֶת הָאָרוֹן בְּקִרְיַת יְעָרִים, וַיִּרְבּוּ הַיָּמִים, וַיִּהְיוּ עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה; וַיִּנָּהוּ כָּל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, אַחֲרֵי יְהוָה. {ס}

And it came to pass, from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years; and all the house of Yisrael yearned after YAHOWAH.

וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-כָּל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר, אִם-בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם אַתֶּם שָׁבִים אֶל-יְהוָה, הָסִירוּ אֶת-אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר מִתּוֹכְכֶם וְהָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת; וְהָכִינוּ לְבַבְכֶם אֶל-יְהוָה וְעִבְדֻהוּ לְבַדּוֹ, וְיַצֵּל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים.

And Samuel spoke unto all the house of Yisrael, saying: 'If ye do return unto YAHOWAH with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts unto YAHOWAH, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.'

וַיָּסִירוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶת-הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת-הָעַשְׁתָּרֹת; וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, לְבַדּוֹ. {פ}

Then the children of Yisrael did put away the falsegod and the Ashtaroth, and served YAHOWAH only.

וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, קִבְצוּ אֶת-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמִּצְפָּתָה; וְאֶתְפַּלֵּל בַּעַדְכֶם, אֶל-יְהוָה.

And Samuel said: 'Gather all Yisrael to Mizpah, and I will pray for you unto YAHOWAH.'

ו
וַיִּקָּבְצוּ הַמִּצְפָּתָה וַיִּשְׁאֲבוּ-מַיִם וַיִּשְׁפְּכוּ לִפְנֵי יְהוָה, וַיָּצוּמוּ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, וַיֹּאמְרוּ שָׁם, חָטָאנוּ לַיהוָה; וַיִּשְׁפֹּט שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, בַּמִּצְפָּה.

And they gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before YAHOWAH, and fasted on that day, and said there: 'We have sinned against YAHOWAH.' And Samuel judged the children of Yisrael in Mizpah.

וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, כִּי-הִתְקַבְּצוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמִּצְפָּתָה, וַיַּעֲלוּ סַרְנֵי-פְלִשְׁתִּים, אֶל-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיִּרְאוּ מִפְּנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים.

And when the Philistines heard that the children of Yisrael were gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Yisrael. And when the children of Yisrael heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

ח
וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, אַל-תַּחֲרֵשׁ מִמֶּנּוּ, מִזְּעֹק אֶל-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ; וְיֹשִׁעֵנוּ, מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים.

And the children of Yisrael said to Samuel: 'Cease not to cry unto YAHOWAH our Eloheem for us, that He save us out of the hand of the Philistines.'

ט
וַיִּקַּח שְׁמוּאֵל, טְלֵה חָלָב אֶחָד, ויעלה (וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ) עוֹלָה כָּלִיל, לַיהוָה; וַיִּזְעַק שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-יְהוָה בְּעַד יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיַּעֲנֵהוּ יְהוָה.

And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt-offering unto YAHOWAH; and Samuel cried unto YAHOWAH for Yisrael; and YAHOWAH answered him.
|

וַיְהִי שְׁמוּאֵל, מַעֲלֶה הָעוֹלָה, וּפְלִשְׁתִּים נִגְּשׁוּ, לַמִּלְחָמָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיַּרְעֵם יְהוָה בְּקוֹל-גָּדוֹל בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא עַל-פְּלִשְׁתִּים, וַיְהֻמֵּם, וַיִּנָּגְפוּ, לִפְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.

And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Yisrael; but YAHOWAH thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten down before Yisrael.

יא
וַיֵּצְאוּ אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל, מִן-הַמִּצְפָּה, וַיִּרְדְּפוּ, אֶת-פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיַּכּוּם, עַד-מִתַּחַת לְבֵית כָּר.

And the men of Yisrael went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.
|

יב
וַיִּקַּח שְׁמוּאֵל אֶבֶן אַחַת, וַיָּשֶׂם בֵּין-הַמִּצְפָּה וּבֵין הַשֵּׁן, וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמָהּ, אֶבֶן הָעָזֶר; וַיֹּאמַר, עַד-הֵנָּה עֲזָרָנוּ יְהוָה.

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying: 'Hitherto hath YAHOWAH helped us.'

יג
וַיִּכָּנְעוּ, הַפְּלִשְׁתִּים, וְלֹא-יָסְפוּ עוֹד, לָבוֹא בִּגְבוּל יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַתְּהִי יַד-יְהוָה בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים, כֹּל יְמֵי שְׁמוּאֵל.

So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Yisrael; and the hand of YAHOWAH was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

יד
וַתָּשֹׁבְנָה הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר לָקְחוּ-פְלִשְׁתִּים מֵאֵת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵעֶקְרוֹן וְעַד-גַּת, וְאֶת-גְּבוּלָן, הִצִּיל יִשְׂרָאֵל מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיְהִי שָׁלוֹם, בֵּין יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבֵין הָאֱמֹרִי.

And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Yisrael were restored to Yisrael, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the border thereof did Yisrael deliver out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Yisrael and the Amorites.

טו
וַיִּשְׁפֹּט שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל, כֹּל יְמֵי חַיָּיו.
|

And Samuel judged Yisrael all the days of his life.
|
|
טז
וְהָלַךְ, מִדֵּי שָׁנָה בְּשָׁנָה, וְסָבַב בֵּית-אֵל, וְהַגִּלְגָּל וְהַמִּצְפָּה; וְשָׁפַט, אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל--אֵת כָּל-הַמְּקוֹמוֹת, הָאֵלֶּה.

And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Yisrael in all those places.
|
|
יז
וּתְשֻׁבָתוֹ הָרָמָתָה כִּי-שָׁם בֵּיתוֹ, וְשָׁם שָׁפָט אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּבֶן-שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ, לַיהוָה. {פ}

And his return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Yisrael; and he built there an altar unto YAHOWAH.
