וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, הִנֵּה שָׁמַעְתִּי בְקֹלְכֶם, לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר-אֲמַרְתֶּם לִי; וָאַמְלִיךְ עֲלֵיכֶם, מֶלֶךְ.
|

And Samuel said unto all Yisrael: 'Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
|
|
ב
וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ מִתְהַלֵּךְ לִפְנֵיכֶם, וַאֲנִי זָקַנְתִּי וָשַׂבְתִּי, וּבָנַי, הִנָּם אִתְּכֶם; וַאֲנִי הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי לִפְנֵיכֶם, מִנְּעֻרַי עַד-הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.

And now, behold, the king walketh before you; and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth unto this day.
|

ג
הִנְנִי עֲנוּ בִי נֶגֶד יְהוָה וְנֶגֶד מְשִׁיחוֹ, אֶת-שׁוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וַחֲמוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וְאֶת-מִי עָשַׁקְתִּי אֶת-מִי רַצּוֹתִי, וּמִיַּד-מִי לָקַחְתִּי כֹפֶר, וְאַעְלִים עֵינַי בּוֹ; וְאָשִׁיב, לָכֶם.

Here I am; witness against me before YAHOWAH, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.'

ד
וַיֹּאמְרוּ, לֹא עֲשַׁקְתָּנוּ וְלֹא רַצּוֹתָנוּ; וְלֹא-לָקַחְתָּ מִיַּד-אִישׁ, מְאוּמָה.
|
4
And they said: 'Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.'
|

ה
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם עֵד יְהוָה בָּכֶם, וְעֵד מְשִׁיחוֹ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה--כִּי לֹא מְצָאתֶם בְּיָדִי, מְאוּמָה; וַיֹּאמֶר, עֵד. {פ}

And he said unto them: 'YAHOWAH is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand.' And they said: 'He is witness.'

ו
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-הָעָם: יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֶת-מֹשֶׁה וְאֶת-אַהֲרֹן, וַאֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלָה אֶת-אֲבֹתֵיכֶם, מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם.

And Samuel said unto the people: 'It is YAHOWAH that made Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
|
|
ז
וְעַתָּה, הִתְיַצְּבוּ וְאִשָּׁפְטָה אִתְּכֶם--לִפְנֵי יְהוָה: אֵת כָּל-צִדְקוֹת יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה אִתְּכֶם וְאֶת-אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם.

Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before YAHOWAH concerning all the righteous acts of YAHOWAH, which He did to you and to your fathers.
|
|
ח
כַּאֲשֶׁר-בָּא יַעֲקֹב, מִצְרָיִם--וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם, אֶל-יְהוָה, וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוָה אֶת-מֹשֶׁה וְאֶת-אַהֲרֹן וַיּוֹצִיאוּ אֶת-אֲבֹתֵיכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם, וַיֹּשִׁבוּם בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה.

When Jacob was come into Egypt, then your fathers cried unto YAHOWAH, and YAHOWAH sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and they were made to dwell in this place.
|
|
ט
וַיִּשְׁכְּחוּ, אֶת-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם; וַיִּמְכֹּר אֹתָם בְּיַד סִיסְרָא שַׂר-צְבָא חָצוֹר וּבְיַד-פְּלִשְׁתִּים, וּבְיַד מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב, וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ, בָּם.
|

But they forgot YAHOWAH their Eloheem, and He gave them over into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
|
|
י
וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֶל-יְהוָה, ויאמר (וַיֹּאמְרוּ) חָטָאנוּ, כִּי עָזַבְנוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, וַנַּעֲבֹד אֶת-הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת-הָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת; וְעַתָּה, הַצִּילֵנוּ מִיַּד אֹיְבֵינוּ--וְנַעַבְדֶךָּ.

And they cried unto YAHOWAH, and said: We have sinned, because we have forsaken YAHOWAH, and have served the falsegod and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve Thee.
|
|
יא
וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוָה אֶת-יְרֻבַּעַל וְאֶת-בְּדָן, וְאֶת-יִפְתָּח וְאֶת-שְׁמוּאֵל; וַיַּצֵּל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד אֹיְבֵיכֶם, מִסָּבִיב, וַתֵּשְׁבוּ, בֶּטַח.

And YAHOWAH sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelt in safety.
|
|
יב
וַתִּרְאוּ, כִּי-נָחָשׁ מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי-עַמּוֹן בָּא עֲלֵיכֶם, וַתֹּאמְרוּ לִי, לֹא כִּי-מֶלֶךְ יִמְלֹךְ עָלֵינוּ: וַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם, מַלְכְּכֶם.

And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me: Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when YAHOWAH your Eloheem was your king.
|
|
יג
וְעַתָּה, הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר בְּחַרְתֶּם--אֲשֶׁר שְׁאֶלְתֶּם; וְהִנֵּה נָתַן יְהוָה עֲלֵיכֶם, מֶלֶךְ.

Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have asked for; and, behold, YAHOWAH hath set a king over you.
|
|
יד
אִם-תִּירְאוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֹתוֹ וּשְׁמַעְתֶּם בְּקוֹלוֹ, וְלֹא תַמְרוּ, אֶת-פִּי יְהוָה--וִהְיִתֶם גַּם-אַתֶּם, וְגַם-הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר מָלַךְ עֲלֵיכֶם, אַחַר, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם.

14
If ye will fear YAHOWAH, and serve Him, and hearken unto His voice, and not rebel against the commandment of YAHOWAH, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of YAHOWAH your Eloheem--;
|
|
טו
וְאִם-לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ בְּקוֹל יְהוָה, וּמְרִיתֶם אֶת-פִּי יְהוָה--וְהָיְתָה יַד-יְהוָה בָּכֶם, וּבַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם.
|
15
but if ye will not hearken unto the voice of YAHOWAH, but rebel against the commandment of YAHOWAH, then shall the hand of YAHOWAH be against you, and against your fathers.
|
|
טז
גַּם-עַתָּה הִתְיַצְּבוּ וּרְאוּ, אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה, אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה, עֹשֶׂה לְעֵינֵיכֶם.
|
16
Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which YAHOWAH will do before your eyes.
|
|
יז
הֲלוֹא קְצִיר-חִטִּים, הַיּוֹם--אֶקְרָא אֶל-יְהוָה, וְיִתֵּן קֹלוֹת וּמָטָר; וּדְעוּ וּרְאוּ, כִּי-רָעַתְכֶם רַבָּה אֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶם בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה, לִשְׁאוֹל לָכֶם, מֶלֶךְ. {ס}

17
Is it not wheat harvest to-day? I will call unto YAHOWAH, that He may send thunder and rain; and ye shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of YAHOWAH, in asking you a king.'

יח
וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-יְהוָה, וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה קֹלֹת וּמָטָר בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא; וַיִּירָא כָל-הָעָם מְאֹד אֶת-יְהוָה, וְאֶת-שְׁמוּאֵל.

So Samuel called unto YAHOWAH; and YAHOWAH sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared YAHOWAH and Samuel.
|
|
יט
וַיֹּאמְרוּ כָל-הָעָם אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, הִתְפַּלֵּל בְּעַד-עֲבָדֶיךָ אֶל-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ--וְאַל-נָמוּת: כִּי-יָסַפְנוּ עַל-כָּל-חַטֹּאתֵינוּ רָעָה, לִשְׁאֹל לָנוּ מֶלֶךְ.

And all the people said unto Samuel: 'Pray for thy servants unto YAHOWAH thy Eloheem, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.'
|
|
כ
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-הָעָם, אַל-תִּירָאוּ--אַתֶּם עֲשִׂיתֶם, אֵת כָּל-הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת; אַךְ, אַל-תָּסוּרוּ מֵאַחֲרֵי יְהוָה, וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֶת-יְהוָה, בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם.

And Samuel said unto the people: 'Fear not; ye have indeed done all this evil; yet turn not aside from following YAHOWAH, but serve YAHOWAH with all your heart;
|
|
כא
וְלֹא, תָּסוּרוּ: כִּי אַחֲרֵי הַתֹּהוּ, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יוֹעִילוּ וְלֹא יַצִּילוּ--כִּי-תֹהוּ הֵמָּה.
|
21
and turn ye not aside; for then should ye go after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.
|
|
כב
כִּי לֹא-יִטֹּשׁ יְהוָה, אֶת-עַמּוֹ--בַּעֲבוּר, שְׁמוֹ הַגָּדוֹל: כִּי הוֹאִיל יְהוָה, לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶתְכֶם לוֹ לְעָם.

22
For YAHOWAH will not forsake His people for His great name's sake; because it hath pleased YAHOWAH to make you a people unto Himself.
|
|
כג
גַּם אָנֹכִי, חָלִילָה לִּי מֵחֲטֹא לַיהוָה--מֵחֲדֹל, לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בַּעַדְכֶם; וְהוֹרֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם, בְּדֶרֶךְ הַטּוֹבָה וְהַיְשָׁרָה.

23
Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against YAHOWAH in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
|
|
כד
אַךְ יְראוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֹתוֹ בֶּאֱמֶת--בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם: כִּי רְאוּ, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-הִגְדִּל עִמָּכֶם.

Only fear YAHOWAH, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things He hath done for you.
|
|
כה
וְאִם-הָרֵעַ, תָּרֵעוּ--גַּם-אַתֶּם גַּם-מַלְכְּכֶם, תִּסָּפוּ. {פ}
|
25
But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be swept away, both ye and your king.'
